Can You Get Married in 3 Months? A Matchmaker Explains
“Is it really possible to get married in three months?”
Hi, I’m Naoko Matsumoto, founder of Traditional Japanese Matchmaker.
In Japan, the country’s largest matchmaking network gives its more than 4,000 member matchmakers one clear goal: marriage in three months.
So, naturally, those matchmakers push their clients to decide within that window.
Is that pressure actually necessary? Let me answer that honestly.
Where Does the “Three Months” Start?
First, let me be clear about what the three months actually means.
Here’s the path, step by step:
- Create your profile
- Start your search and receive introductions
- Meet on Zoom first, then in person
- Casual dating (you can see several people at once)
- Serious, exclusive relationship
- Engagement
- The start of your married life together
That goal covers steps 1 through 6. Engagement is the finish line.
During the casual dating phase, you’re allowed to get to know more than one person. At TJM, though, I ask my clients to keep it to three at most. Spread yourself across more than three people and your energy scatters. Chances are, none of them will go anywhere.
And casual dating isn’t meant to drift. If you live overseas, within about three months you should be planning your trip to Japan to meet her in person.
After you meet, you narrow it down to one person. The moment you both say, “I want to take this seriously with you,” that’s when your serious, exclusive relationship begins.

What Happens in Those Three Months
From the day you declare yourselves exclusive, you spend three months going deeper. You visit each other, more than once. You meet each other’s parents. You take real, concrete steps toward engagement.
Put it that way, and three months from becoming exclusive to engagement is not unrealistic at all.
My Own Story
I’m a matchmaker, so let me tell you about my own marriage.
I met my husband in Los Angeles in July 2006. We were married in Baltimore that October. Three months, start to finish.
When two people are both genuinely committed to marriage, decisions come fast. We have a child, we love and look after each other, and we’ve been happily married for twenty years. So no, I don’t believe deciding in three months makes you more likely to make a mistake.
Engagement Isn’t the End of the Timeline
Here’s something specific to international marriage. Engagement isn’t the finish line for you.
After you’re engaged, you file for an immigration visa, and getting it takes time. More than a year.
Your married life together truly begins after the visa comes through. So plan for that from the start. “Three months to engagement” and “a year or more for the visa” are two separate clocks. Think about both, together, from day one.
Why Dating Apps Eat Your Three Months
When two people meet on an app, they can spend three months just figuring out the basics. Is this person really single? Do they actually want marriage?
And even if you meet by chance on vacation and fall head over heels, it takes a very long time to truly understand each other.
Some Women Can’t Wait
Now the other side. Imagine two people who never decide, and three years go by, then five. Nothing is settled. That kind of relationship runs on uncertainty, without the quiet confidence that you can trust each other.
Women who want children can’t wait forever for a man who won’t commit. If they wait too long, the chance may be gone. Many of them would rather not have their lives wasted by a man who can’t make up his mind. They’d rather be with a man who decides quickly, so they can build a family as soon as possible. A lot of women feel this way.
If you truly want to marry, waiting and watching won’t get you there. Set a goal. Three months. Six months. Twelve months. Then act on it.
A Matchmaking Agency Is a Well-Built System
An agency like TJM is designed to work. If marriage is your goal, treat it like any serious project: make a plan, build a strategy, and decide how long it should take to reach the finish line. Your matchmaker’s advice exists to get you there. To help you decide within three months, I may sometimes push you a little harder than you’d like.
Use us to carry out your project. Put it at the very top of your priorities, at least as high as your work, and it becomes real.
Make It Happen in the First Half of 2027
There are only two months left in the year. If you commit today to deciding within three months, you could be in a serious, exclusive relationship by early 2027, and engaged by the time the cherry blossoms bloom. That’s not out of reach.
Let’s make the plan together.
