7 Things to Know Before She Flies to See You: A Matchmaker’s Honest Advice for International Dating
Hello, I’m Naoko Matsumoto, founder of Traditional Japanese Matchmaker. For the past 27 years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting countless couples through the journey of international marriage.
When the woman you’re falling for tells you she’s flying halfway around the world just to see you, of course you want to make it unforgettable. You want to spoil her, impress her, show her exactly how much she means to you. That instinct is beautiful, and it says a lot about your heart.
But today, I want to gently pull back the curtain on something many men don’t think to ask: what is she really feeling underneath all of that excitement? After watching so many couples navigate this exact moment, here is what I want you to know.
Contents
- 1. Sit with her nervousness — don’t just brush it away
- 2. The golden rule: never let her overextend herself
- 3. Think twice before offering to cover her flight
- 4. That offer to stay at your place carries more weight than you think
- 5. Given today’s weak yen, her visit is a bigger act of commitment than you realize
- 6. Know what can happen at immigration
- 7. Honestly, it’s better if you go to her first
1. Sit with her nervousness — don’t just brush it away
Flying across the world to meet you is a much bigger decision than you might realize. Even if she never says it out loud, she’s likely carrying a quiet weight of worries — the paperwork, the unfamiliar immigration process, and yes, even the nerves of seeing you again in person.
Please don’t settle for a simple “don’t worry, it’ll be fine.” Ask her what’s actually on her mind, and work through it together. This is the foundation everything else on this list is built on.
2. The golden rule: never let her overextend herself
If there’s one thing to remember above all else, it’s this — don’t let her push herself past her limits.
Between the language barrier, the jet lag, the unfamiliar surroundings, and the very real pressure of wondering what you think of her, she is carrying more than you probably imagine, all the way to your doorstep. Once she arrives, keep checking in. Is she overdoing it? Is she tired?
Is she feeling out of her depth? Your attentiveness here means everything.
3. Think twice before offering to cover her flight
I understand the impulse. When you care about someone, offering to pay for her ticket feels like the generous, natural thing to do, and I believe that generosity is genuine.
But here’s something I want you to consider. If she meets you in person and realizes you’re not quite who she hoped for, having accepted your money makes it much harder for her to walk away and tell you honestly. Financial debt has a way of making it difficult for anyone to say “no” with a clear conscience.
This isn’t only true in the earliest stages, either. Even once you’re in an exclusive relationship, even once you’re engaged, I’ve found that couples do better when they avoid creating a financial “debt” between them. Standing on equal footing is what allows a partnership to last.
4. That offer to stay at your place carries more weight than you think
This applies especially in the early stages, when you’ve just met and haven’t yet agreed to become exclusive with one another.
I know this offer usually comes from a good place. It saves money, it’s convenient, and honestly, it usually just means you want more time together. I understand that completely.
But for a woman who hasn’t yet decided where this relationship is headed, that invitation can feel like a much bigger step than you intend.
You may be picturing physical intimacy as a natural next step. She, more often than not, is nowhere near ready for that.
Please book her a hotel room instead. Having her own private space to retreat to gives her far more peace of mind than you’d expect. It sounds counterintuitive, but it’s precisely that room to breathe that lets her relax and actually enjoy her time with you.
There’s also something you may not know. Under the rules of Japan’s association of licensed matchmaking agencies (IBJ), if a woman working with a matchmaker takes an overnight trip with a man she’s dating, it’s officially treated as reaching marriage — what’s known as a “success withdrawal,” where the matching fee becomes due and the matchmaker’s support officially ends right there. I know that probably sounds strict. But it reflects just how seriously spending the night together is regarded in Japan, as something that carries the weight of marriage itself. Please don’t take that lightly.
5. Given today’s weak yen, her visit is a bigger act of commitment than you realize
Right now, the Japanese yen is at a historic low. For her, traveling abroad isn’t a small financial decision — it’s a real commitment, and not one she’s making lightly.
So please plan her visit with that in mind. Build your schedule around giving her as much of your time as you possibly can. Don’t let “I’m busy with work” or “I’m tired” become the reason she walks away feeling like an afterthought — that would be the last thing she deserves after making a decision this significant.
What I really want for her is to leave thinking, “I’m so glad I came to see him. I can picture moving from a serious relationship into an engagement with him.” Truly honoring her commitment means giving her a visit that leaves her feeling exactly that sure.
6. Know what can happen at immigration
This is something I wish more men understood. It’s actually fairly common for a single woman traveling alone to be pulled aside by immigration officers and questioned in a separate room, almost as though she were a criminal, despite having done nothing wrong.
When she enters on a tourist visa, her stated purpose is tourism, and officers are trained to watch for anyone who might have other intentions. So it helps enormously if she knows, in advance, to stay calm, cooperate fully, answer honestly, and never appear resistant.
If she is taken aside, they may go through her phone in detail, including her social media, and even check personal items like feminine hygiene products or underwear. After an already long flight, being held for three hours or more is genuinely exhausting, and it happens more often than you’d think.
This is exactly why, at TJM, I personally make sure every female member planning to travel understands this reality beforehand. Knowing it’s a possibility means that if it does happen, she can stay calm instead of panicking.
And if you’re the one waiting at the airport — even if her flight has already landed, you may still be waiting a long while before you actually see her. It’s natural to worry, or even feel frustrated if you can’t reach her. But please remember: none of this is her fault. Whatever you do, please don’t let her feel blamed for it.
7. Honestly, it’s better if you go to her first
A single woman traveling alone carries real risk, in more ways than one. Everything I’ve shared above can help soften that risk, but the real solution lies elsewhere.
Rather than asking her to make this trip again and again before either of you has made a decision, consider going to see her first. Think about how the two of you can become exclusive, truly focused on just each other, as early in the relationship as possible.
Don’t let her carry the travel, the expense, and the immigration risk on her own. Show her, through your own actions, that you’re just as invested as she is.
Her decision to fly across the world to see you is never a small one. Please honor the weight of every step she’s taking, and do what you can, one thoughtful gesture at a time, to make her journey to you feel safe.
If you ever have questions about how to navigate international dating or marriage, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Whatever I can do to help, I’m here for you.
