Last weekend, I got to spend time with our members in New York City.

Hi, I’m Naoko Matsumoto, founder of Traditional Japanese Matchmaker.

The bus ride from Baltimore takes three hours each way. As I head north on I-95 and watch the scenery slowly turn into skyline, I always think the same thing: somewhere at the end of this road, there might be a meeting that changes someone’s life.

I traveled to New York on August 8th and 9th to meet with members who live there, along with people who are considering joining TJM.

Before the pandemic, I actually used to hold consultations in New York every single month. When COVID made it hard for people to meet freely, I had to pause that for a while. But it’s been a few years now, and I can feel people moving around, meeting each other, and living their lives more openly again. So this trip felt like the right moment to bring monthly, in-person consultations in New York back for good.

Three hours each way, six hours round trip — I won’t pretend it’s a short distance. But I’ve never once thought of it as a burden. Because what’s waiting at the other end is always someone’s real, honest hope for their future.

What stayed with me most from this trip was the time I spent with one of our female members.

I won’t share the specifics here, out of respect for her privacy. But I want you to know this much: she has lived through a genuinely difficult period in her life — the kind of loneliness and pain most people never speak of out loud. And instead of letting that hold her back, she poured everything she had into her career and built her way to New York entirely on her own strength.

Listening to her story, I felt something in my chest tighten. Someone who has fought that hard, who has lived with that much resilience — I want, more than anything, for her to find real happiness. She has earned the right to stop carrying it all alone. As her matchmaker, I want to walk alongside her story and help her find a partner who deserves the life she’s built.

That same evening, actually, the three of us ended up together — she, and one of our male members who had just returned from a trip to Tokyo. We went to a Japanese izakaya for dinner, then picked up ice cream afterward and wandered through Manhattan as the sun went down. Whether the two of them turn out to be a match — well, that’s something only fate knows. But it was a genuinely lovely evening, and I felt lucky to be part of it. M, thank you for such a wonderful time — I really enjoyed it.

How Many Japanese People Actually Live in New York?

According to the Asian American Federation’s 2025 report, Japanese in NYC: A Profile, roughly 32,300 to 33,700 Japanese people call New York home. (Source: https://www.aafederation.org/research/ethnicprofile-japanese-2025/)

So how many of them are single Japanese women of marrying age? And how many single men in New York actually hope to marry one of them?

You won’t find that answer by swiping through profiles. You won’t find it by waiting behind a screen, hoping the right match appears. But when you sit across from someone, look them in the eye, and actually talk, real relationships — the kind that can lead to marriage — become so much easier to build.

As a matchmaker, I see it as my mission to keep creating real, face-to-face opportunities for you to meet someone in person.
