A typical speed dating conversation stays safe — hobbies, jobs, weekend plans. At one of our Tokyo events, we took a different approach. Instead of surface-level questions, we gave participants prompts designed to surface what actually matters in an international marriage:

Will your family need to approve this relationship?

Do you expect to live near your parents, or are you open to relocating?
How would you split financial support for family back home?
How often would your spouse need to visit Japan?

Who covers the cost of those visits?

If you had to choose between career and family tomorrow, which comes first?
These aren’t easy questions to answer in five minutes. That’s the point. As we tell our members, working through them “gives you a much better understanding of the other person’s personality” than weeks of messaging ever could.

At one of our Tokyo sessions — six men who had flown in from the U.S. West Coast, Ohio, Texas, and New Jersey, meeting nine Japanese women across several short sessions — the feedback spoke for itself. One male participant told us afterward:
