Unique Online Event to Connect Across Cultures
Last week, we hosted an intimate online gathering called “Speak English with Japanese Women.”
It was a small but meaningful event with one male member and four single Japanese women, all of whom are seriously looking for a lifelong partner.
The purpose?
To connect through real conversations about relationships, dating, and what we each look for in a long-term partner. But more than that—it was a chance to practice authentic communication across cultures, and to learn how to build deeper connections in cross-cultural settings.
Elevator Pitches That Leave an Impression
Each participant was asked to prepare a one-minute self-introduction—also known as an elevator pitch. This wasn’t just about listing hobbies or jobs. It was about expressing your true self in a short time.
We encouraged a simple yet powerful structure:
- Who you are and where you’re from
- What brings you joy (your values and passions)
- Why you joined the matchmaking service and what kind of partner you are hoping to meet
This format helps others understand and remember you—especially when you’re meeting someone for the first time in a matchmaking setting.
Communication Is a Two-Way Street
One of the biggest takeaways from this event?
Good communication means showing genuine interest.
We reminded participants:
- Don’t dominate the conversation
- Avoid rapid-fire questions like a job interview
- Ask open-ended questions and really listen
In real-life dates, foreign men sometimes unintentionally speak too much or ask question after question without giving Japanese women a chance to speak—especially since English is not their first language.
Instead, we encouraged our male participants to become great listeners, to create a safe and comfortable space where Japanese women feel supported and valued—even when their English isn’t perfect.
Remember: imagine how you would feel speaking Japanese on a date. Your effort would mean everything. The same goes for her.
Be Yourself — Authenticity Builds Trust
In traditional Japanese education, there are very few opportunities to learn public speaking or self-expression. Many women are not used to asserting themselves, especially in a group setting.
Some participants were so nervous—even in a small, friendly group—that they hesitated to speak up and waited for someone to call on them. Others were shy about their English ability and became quiet, fearing they weren’t “good enough.”
That’s why we always say:
- Don’t aim for perfection. Aim for connection.
- We encouraged participants to:
- Speak naturally (not from a script)
Share their real personality through stories
Let go of “perfect English” or “perfect Japanese”
These small group discussions help women practice expressing themselves. Over time, this builds confidence and allows them to connect more deeply with you in future one-on-one conversations.
We also asked fun, themed questions to help spark conversation:
To the women: If a man visits Japan, where would you take him on a date?
To the men: If a woman visits your city, where would you take her?
These questions allowed participants to reflect on their hometowns and personal dating styles.
When asked about dates in Japan, the women shared many beautiful and lesser-known local spots—hidden gems like Minato Mirai in Yokohama and Mt. Wakakusa in Nara. Some suggestions were places even Japanese people don’t often think of, which made us all excited for future travels.
Meanwhile, the gentleman who joined the event lives in Arizona. When asked about date spots, he painted a vivid picture of peaceful natural settings, not luxurious restaurants or tourist attractions.
He said, “If I visit Japan to see my future partner, I just want a quiet space—like a picnic spot—where we can talk deeply and enjoy our time together.”
One surprise guest—my husband, Roland—also shared a beautiful memory. Before we got married, during a road trip from Los Angeles to Maryland, we stayed at a unique community in Arizona called Arcosanti. He recalled seeing countless shooting stars together, calling it our own personal hidden gem.
Moments like these stay in your heart forever.
More Events Like This Are Coming
We plan to host more group conversations like this—different from our typical 1-on-1 speed dating events. These themed, open discussions are a great way for women to learn about you, and for you to get a sense of the kind of women you might want to meet.
If you’re curious, please consider joining next time.
It’s a beautiful way to start imagining a life together.

All participants—both male and female—were single, sincere, and looking for a meaningful relationship.
