Religion in Japan is quite different from the West. Most Japanese people do not follow a single monotheistic faith. Instead, traditions are woven into daily life:
Many homes have both a Shinto altar (kamidana) and a Buddhist altar (butsudan).

Families visit ancestral graves in March and September, and welcome ancestors’ spirits home during Obon in August.

Christmas is celebrated not as a religious holiday but as a romantic day for couples, with cake and gift exchanges.

Many couples, even if not Christian, choose to have a church wedding.

For most Japanese, religion is less about strict belief and more about culture and tradition. While few read the Bible, many embrace the idea of “yaoyorozu no kami” (eight million gods), seeing divinity in nature, the sun, the ocean, and the universe itself.

How Many Christians Are in Japan?

Compared to neighboring Asian countries, Japan has a very small Christian population.

Japan 🇯🇵:
About 0.7% of the population identifies as Christian (approx. 300,000 people).

South Korea 🇰🇷:
Around 31% of the population, or 16 million people.

China 🇨🇳:
Official figures say about 5% are Christian, with some estimates lower.

In short, Christians in Japan are a small minority. This means that finding a Christian Japanese woman is possible, but it may take time and patience.

Are There Christian Japanese Women?

The answer is Yes—there are Christian Japanese women. Some of my closest friends are Christian Japanese women. But because Christians are a minority in Japan, if you limit yourself only to women who already share your faith, your chances of meeting someone may be narrower.

At the same time, many Japanese women—especially those interested in international marriage—are open-minded, respectful, and willing to learn about their partner’s faith. For them, religion is not a barrier but an opportunity to grow and share values together.

Some women may not be Christian at first, but they are ready to support your faith and even join you in your spiritual journey after marriage.
