Living Their Dream: American Family Life in Japan

A few years ago, a couple who met and married through TJM moved to Japan with their entire family and became YouTubers. They create content in Japanese, but if you can watch it with English subtitles or translation, I highly recommend checking it out.

You can really feel their warm family life through their videos, as they share their experiences of moving from the US to Japan, adjusting to their new life, their children taking on the challenge of attending Japanese schools, and participating in Japanese cultural events.

 First Meeting in Tokyo: The Girl in Pink

When RIE first knocked on TJM’s door, our office was located in Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo. She arrived dressed completely in pink, and because she was an enthusiastic follower of a JPOP group, she left a very unique and memorable impression on the foreign men who met her.

She decided to register as a member because she was seriously thinking about marrying a foreign man. The fact that she took the Shinkansen all the way from Aichi Prefecture to come to our Tokyo office for the interview clearly showed how serious she was.

Why the first introduction didn’t work out

The first man we introduced to her was about the same age as she was, but things didn’t work out. At that time, she had a parent in Japan who depended on her financially, and if she were to get married and move to the United States, she planned to work as well. However, when she told him that she might not be able to find a job overseas immediately after getting married, he decided not to pursue a serious relationship with her. Perhaps he felt that he would have to take on all of the financial responsibility himself. (She was planning to work and send money back to her parent in Japan.)

Meeting Him: A 59-Year-Old Man with a Dream

The next man we introduced to her is now her husband. At that time, she was 34 years old and he was 59. He had a strong desire to marry a Japanese woman and have children. Although there was a significant age difference between them, he was running his own business in San Diego and was financially stable. It seems that the deciding factor for their marriage was that he was considerate not only of her but also of her parent’s situation.

Above all, he was a very handsome and wonderful man. It might have been his charm that RIE found so attractive, which ultimately led her to choose him.

Love Surprises in San Diego

The two of them built their relationship smoothly, and eventually decided to get married. After completing the visa procedures, she left Japan and arrived at his home in San Diego for the first time. What surprised her was that he had prepared a pink refrigerator, her favorite color, to welcome her.

She was deeply moved by the pink refrigerator. In one of their YouTube videos, there is a room tour where you can see her showing the kitchen, and that pink refrigerator appears in the video as well. Please check it out if you have a chance.

Blessed with a Child and Financial Stability

After getting married, they were blessed with children, and now the couple lives as a family of four with their two elementary school-aged kids. Her husband has turned 70 and has retired, now living on his pension. The value of their home in San Diego exceeded two million dollars, allowing them to rent it out and move to Japan as a family. They also talk about the value of their house in one of their YouTube videos.

Moving to Japan and Becoming YouTubers

While preparing to move to Japan, RIE started her YouTube channel and is now active as a popular YouTuber. Her videos, which show her life in Japan with her husband and the growth of their children, are very enjoyable to watch. They feel realistic because viewers can watch them from the perspective of “What if I moved to Japan with my American husband and children?”
