This was the sign for TJM’s Singles Event in Akihabara. 

Akihabara is famous as the mecca of anime.

Event Summary

On Saturday, July 13th, 2024 we held our singles event in Tokyo. The event was attended by 5 men and 6 women. The men came from various states on the East and West Coasts of the United States, while the women came from Hiroshima, Osaka, Gifu, Nagoya, and Tokyo. The fact that participants traveled a long distance by plane or Shinkansen demonstrates their serious intentions. We sincerely appreciate everyone for joining us on such a hot day.

English Introductions and the “Good and New” Challenge

Our event started with everyone introducing themselves in English. To break the ice, we played a game called “Good and New,” where participants shared positive experiences from the past 24 hours. The ladies, in particular, rose to the challenge, showcasing their English skills and personal charm.

First Half: Speed Dating Sessions

The first half of the event was a speed dating session. Participants engaged in 15 minute one-on-one conversations in a round-robin format, with each participant having five matches. The spacious table setting allowed for private and comfortable conversations.

Since everyone had already introduced themselves during the icebreaker, participants were able to delve deeper into getting to know each other.

Unlike traditional speed dating events where participants often switch partners every 5 minutes, leading to a rushed atmosphere and difficulty remembering names and faces, our speed dating format provides 15 minutes for each session, which is ample space for meaningful conversations. This approach has consistently received positive feedback from participants.

We also provided a consultation booth for women, allowing them to have in-depth conversations with our matchmakers.

Mingle Time

During the event, we incorporated a mingle time where all participants formed a circle and engaged in English discussions on a common theme. Such opportunities for English discussions are rare in Japan, making it a great chance for the female participants to put their English skills to the test.

While I was tallying the match results with Luna during the mingle time, I was impressed by how the participants took the initiative and led the discussions. The female participants demonstrated exceptional leadership and communication skills.

It’s clear that those who aspire to marry internationally have a proactive and highly conscious mindset.

Refreshments and Relaxation

Kakinoha sushi and sandwiches were served as refreshments, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The mingle time allowed participants to unwind and connect with each other on a deeper level.

Matching Results

Participants were given time to select up to two people they would like to meet again. After tallying the results, we announced the matches within the event. As a result, a total of four couples were formed.

Since participants could select up to two people, there was some overlap in the matches, but considering the number of participants, the matching rate was quite high.

One of the benefits of in-person events is the ability to observe subtle details about a person that may not be apparent from a profile, such as their tone of voice, gestures, consideration for others, and unexpected traits. Discovering deep commonalities with someone is a rewarding aspect of these events.

A New Beginning

The couples formed at the event are now embarking on a new chapter.

For those who went on one-on-one dates while the male participants were in Japan, this marks the true beginning of their relationships.

Even for those who didn’t match during the event, all participants had the opportunity to interact with our matchmakers, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of their personalities. Having had a face-to-face meeting with each participant makes it easier for us to provide introductions and support in the future.

The woman sitting at the back is Luna, our matchmaker. Luna was once a TJM member who found happiness through our service and is now helping others as a matchmaker.

Event Follow-up

We’re delighted to share that two couples who met at our event have reported that they are now in serious relationships.
