Why Do Japanese Women Consider a Man’s Income Before Marriage?
I received an inquiry through a LinkedIn message from a gentleman. I wanted to share it with you, as it might be important for you to learn about Japanese women as well.

The Question
Question: why are Japanese single women more articulate on knowing how much money and position one has before they commit to a relationship. I know Japanese ancient family culture from the rural country is very simple and lives in simplicity. Are only those city born women more accustomed to rely on power and stature? Just wanted to ask Thank you
High Standard of Living in Japan
Thank You for Your Question. First of all, it’s important to understand that Japan is a very prosperous country, one of the most prosperous in the world and its citizens are accustomed to a high standard of living, especially in the larger cities, where most of our female members are from. It would not make sense for a person from Japan to want to move to another country and want to step down in their standard of living. Just like it would not make sense for an American to want to move to Japan and want to live at a lower standard of living.
Vulnerability of Women Moving Abroad
Secondly, being a woman makes one particularly vulnerable when moving overseas, since it can be hard to get a job, as discussed below and since women are the principal childcare providers. A man has a certain more freedom in that he typically does not worry about child rearing. But a woman has to keep that in mind. A woman will only want to take the risk of moving overseas when she knows that there is a stable and dependable situation waiting for her. Otherwise, it would be too risky. There is no reason why a woman should risk her standard of living or quality of life when she is already taking a big risk on a new relationship in a completely new country.
Career Challenges for Urban Japanese Women
Furthermore, women who were born and raised in urban areas tend to be independent, and many of them wish to find a job and continue working even after getting married and relocating overseas. However, women with high-level careers understand that it is often difficult to find companies abroad that will value them at the same level or higher than their positions in Japan. As a result, they recognize that the income they can earn on their own in a new country may be limited.
Fear of Declining Living Standards
They are concerned that their standard of living, which they currently enjoy in Japan, might decline after relocating. Therefore, they hope to meet men with a certain level of income so that even during the period when they are unemployed after moving, they can maintain the same or an even better lifestyle as they did in Japan.
Immigration Requirements for Sponsorship
Another reason is that if a man’s annual income falls below a certain amount, there is a possibility that immigration authorities will not approve the visa sponsorship, making it difficult for them to proceed with the relocation.
